I road up in those hills

Like when we all used to go

Cut a tree like the one

That we used to alone

Behind the old sorrel mare

I drag it down off the slopes

Trimmed it up in the corner

With tinsel and hoped

I ain’t heard from my son

And I won’t I expect

The other’s flight

It was cancelled

At least that’s what he said

My daughter’s takin' the kids again

To Maui this year

I guess don’t blame em'

It’s pretty cold round here

Or I’d be here at home

Eighty years old spending Christmas alone

A blizzard is howling

And night it grows near

It’s just me and the ponies

For Christmas this year

It’s bitterly cold with three feet of snow

And this wouldn’t be home

If the wind didn’t blow

Can’t get out of the yard

I’m snowed in with the drifts

And no one is coming to open these gates

If I were my father I’d hitch up a team

Take the sleigh to the neighbour’s for brandy and cream

But that world is gone

It’s all dissappeared

It’s just me and the ponies

For Christmas this year

This old barn is still standing

Not much longer I think

I can see the north star

Through the holes in the chink

Tonight it’s oats for my pals

And me a bottle of cheer
